Cheap Claude API Pricing in 2026: What You Actually Pay

Compare official Anthropic Claude rates with live AtmoRouter Claude API prices, work a real agent-day cost, and connect with one base-URL change.

A search for "cheap Claude API" usually returns affiliate roundups and screenshots of rate cards. This post is narrower: take Anthropic's published list prices, line them up against live AtmoRouter Claude catalogue entries, and show what an agent workload actually costs per day. Prices below were read from AtmoRouter's public models API on November 6, 2026 (Asia/Jakarta). They refresh continuously — treat the models catalogue as the source of truth.

This is an AtmoRouter-authored pricing walkthrough, not an independent benchmark. It does not claim every request will hit the lowest listed tier.

Official Claude list prices (the baseline)

Anthropic publishes per-million-token rates on its pricing page. The mid-2026 figures that matter for most agent traffic are:

| Model | Official input / MTok | Official output / MTok | |---|---|---| | Claude Sonnet 4.6 | $3.00 | $15.00 | | Claude Sonnet 5 / 5.5 | $2.00 | $10.00 | | Claude Opus 4.6 | $5.00 | $25.00 | | Claude Haiku 4.5 | $1.00 | $5.00 |

Those are the numbers a direct Anthropic account bills. A "cheap Claude API" claim is only meaningful when it is divided into these rates for the exact model you call.

Live AtmoRouter Claude rates

AtmoRouter exposes Claude-family models through catalogue IDs that include a family prefix. Several price tiers can exist for one ID; the table uses the lowest listed tier at the time of writing. Higher tiers also appear in the catalogue — set maximum prices in Budgets if you need a hard ceiling.

| Catalogue ID | From input / MTok | From output / MTok | vs official input | |---|---|---|---| | cc/claude-sonnet-4-6 | $0.3975 | $1.9875 | ~86.8% below $3 | | cc/claude-sonnet-5 | $0.24 | $1.20 | 88% below $2 | | cc/claude-sonnet-5-5 | $0.15 | $0.75 | 92.5% below $2 | | cc/claude-opus-4-6 | $0.3625 | $1.8125 | ~92.8% below $5 | | cc/claude-haiku-4-5 | $0.125 | $0.625 | 87.5% below $1 |

Copy the ID exactly, including the cc/ prefix. A familiar short name typed from memory is a common source of model-not-found errors.

Where a model supports prompt caching, AtmoRouter bills reported cached input at 10% of the input rate. Failed requests are never billed.

What one agent-day actually costs

Per-million prices are easy to misread. Use a concrete loop instead.

Assume a coding agent turn with 12,000 input tokens and 400 output tokens, run 400 times in one active user-day — the same shape used in our real-cost worked example.

At the lowest listed cc/claude-sonnet-4-6 rates:

  • Input: 12,000 / 1,000,000 × $0.3975 ≈ $0.00477 per turn
  • Output: 400 / 1,000,000 × $1.9875 ≈ $0.00080 per turn
  • Per turn ≈ $0.00557
  • Per user-day (400 turns) ≈ $2.23

The same token mix against Anthropic's $3 / $15 Sonnet 4.6 list price is about $0.042 per turn, or roughly $16.80 per user-day — before any cache benefit on either side.

If 80% of the input is a reported cache hit on AtmoRouter, cached tokens bill at 10% of input:

  • Uncached 2,400 × $0.3975 / 1M ≈ $0.00095
  • Cached 9,600 × $0.03975 / 1M ≈ $0.00038
  • Output ≈ $0.00080
  • Per turn ≈ $0.00213 → about $0.85 per user-day

Those are arithmetic examples from the rates above, not a guarantee of cache-hit rate or tier availability. Verify real hits in Usage logs; a familiar-looking prompt is not proof of a cache hit. See prompt caching for AI agents.

Connect with a base-URL swap

Claude-flavored tooling does not need a separate Anthropic account to call these catalogue IDs. AtmoRouter serves an Anthropic-compatible Messages endpoint for the whole catalogue.

Claude Code:

bashexport ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL="https://atmorouter.dev"
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN="ar-xxxxxxxxxxxx"
claude

Anthropic Python SDK (note: no /v1 — the SDK appends its own path):

pythonimport os
from anthropic import Anthropic

client = Anthropic(
    base_url="https://atmorouter.dev",
    api_key=os.environ["ATMOROUTER_API_KEY"],
)

msg = client.messages.create(
    model="cc/claude-sonnet-4-6",
    max_tokens=256,
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Reply in one short sentence."}],
)
print(msg.content[0].text)

OpenAI-compatible clients use https://atmorouter.dev/v1 instead and the same dashboard key. Full protocol notes are in Anthropic-compatible endpoint and coding agent setup.

How to evaluate any "cheap Claude API" claim

  1. 1.Name the model. Sonnet, Opus and Haiku are different rate cards. A Haiku discount does not price a Sonnet workload.
  2. 2.Divide by the official list. Gateway price ÷ Anthropic list price is the only honest discount arithmetic.
  3. 3.Price your token mix. Agent bills are dominated by repeated input, not clever output.
  4. 4.Ask about failed requests. At 5–10% retries, billing errors is a silent tax. AtmoRouter does not bill them.
  5. 5.Confirm the ID in the live catalogue before you move production traffic.

FAQ

Is the lowest listed tier always available?

No. Catalogue entries can show several tiers with different offer counts. The lowest price is a snapshot, not a capacity guarantee. Use Budgets to cap input and output prices if you need a hard limit.

Do I need both an Anthropic key and an AtmoRouter key?

No. One AtmoRouter key covers the OpenAI-compatible and Anthropic-compatible endpoints. Your Anthropic account balance does not transfer.

Where do I check the current Claude prices?

Open the model page for the exact ID, or call GET https://atmorouter.dev/v1/models with your key. The pricing page summarizes flagship families.

If the math fits your workload, create a key in API Keys, pick a Claude catalogue ID, and run a small disposable task before moving normal traffic.
